“Pure Land Buddhism and the Great Earth”
Lands, fields, grounds, and the “Great Earth” (J. daichi 大地) are key metaphors in Mahāyāna Buddhist literature, history, and practice. In Pure Land traditions, ideas of “land” and “field” are absolutely central to various cosmological and soteriological forms. Both historically and in the contemporary moment, too, the individuals, groups, discourse, and institutions of Pure Land Buddhism have always been in relationship with the climate and surrounding environment. And in our contemporary moment of political instability and ecological destruction, where dwelling on this great earth is imperiled, questions of how Pure Land Buddhist thinkers and communities have understood and idealized utopian lands, or have understood and critiqued polluted lands, come to the foreground.
We invite papers that address that explore Pure Land Buddhism in relation to the “Great Earth” broadly understood. Papers may center on any geographical region, historical period, or methodological approach. We welcome papers on themes such as:
- Textual analysis of ideas related to land, earth, field, or ground in Buddhist literature and culture
- Philosophical approaches to earth in Pure Land cosmology
- Comparative perspectives on “land” and sacred geography in Pure Land Buddhism
- Rituals and lived practice that articulates a relationship with the earth and environment
- Movements that link Pure Land Buddhism with environmental ethics
- Understandings of land or ground in buddhahood and the bodhisattva path

「浄土教と大地」
「土地」や「大地」は、大乗仏教の文献、歴史、実践における重要な比喩です。浄土教の伝統において、「土地」や「田」という概念は、様々な宇宙観や救済論の形態において不可欠な役割を果たしています。歴史的にも、また現代においても、浄土教に関わる個人、団体、言説、そして制度は、常に気候や周囲の環境と密接な関係にありました。政治的不安定さと生態系の破壊が進み、地球上での暮らしが危ぶまれている現代において、浄土教の思想家やコミュニティがユートピア的な土地をいかに理解し理想化してきたか、あるいは汚染された土地をいかに理解し批判してきたかという問いが、今まさに浮かび上がっています。
私たちは、広義の意味での「大地」に関連した浄土教の研究論文を募集します。論文は、いかなる地理的地域、歴史的時代、または研究手法に基づいたものでも構いません。以下のようなテーマを歓迎します：
- 仏教文献および文化における「土地、大地、田、地」に関連する概念のテキスト分析
- 浄土教の宇宙観における「大地」への哲学的アプローチ
- 浄土教における「土地」や聖なる地理に関する比較研究
- 大地や環境との関わりを表現する儀礼や実践
